Terence Steve McQueen nació el 30 de Marzo de 1930 en Beach Grove, un pequeño pueblo de Indianápolis. Su juventud fue dura y venturosa. Su padre era piloto especialista en un circo ambulante y su madre una joven alcohólica que ocasionalmente trabajaba como camarera. Abandonado por su padre creció rodeado de pobreza. Pasó tiempo en reformatorios donde llegó a formar parte de una banda dedicada a asaltos y hurtos. Él mismo diría: 'Mi vida fue complicada desde antes de mi nacimiento'. Su lucha por sobrevivir y su sensación de desarraigo marcaron el resto de su vida: nunca fue capaz de confiar en nadie debido a que lo habían dejado en la estacada en tantas ocasiones. En la película Michael Delaney conduce un Porsche 917 para el equipo Gulf, equipo que realmente participó en las 24 horas de Le Mans. Durante las primeras semanas de proyección de la película la demanda de las chaquetas del equipo Gulf aumentaron tan rápidamente que el fabricante no pudo satisfacer toda la demanda.
