Biopic de Leonard Chess, quien nació en 1917 en Polonia y comenzó su andadura en 1947 al comprar el sello Aristocrat Records, que grababa a Sunnyland Slim y a un desconocido guitarrista del Delta del Mississippi: Muddy Waters. Chess que tenía la particularidad de recorrer clubes de blues y firmar contratos en el asiente trasero de su Cadillac, incorporó en 1948 a Willie Dixon, quien habría de ser su principal "cazatalentos", y cambiaron el nombre de la empresa por el de Chess Records. A partir de ahí fue subiendo en prestigio hasta ser promotor de algunos de los artistas fundamentales del blues urbano como Robert Nighthawk, Isaiah Ross y Bobby Bland.
Total que en contra de lo que pudiera parecer -que con esas ventas creciera más todavía el sello discográfico- la promoción de dichos artistas les metieron en serios problemas financieros.
